Two empty buses exploded simultaneously in separate parking lots, followed on later by a third in Bat Yam, a suburb of Tel Aviv, police said on Monday. Authorities suspect the incident was an attempted coordinated terror attack.
There were no casualties in the explosions. The Bat Yam Municipality stated that “miraculously, the buses arrived at the parking lots a moment before the explosion.”
Two more explosive devices have been disabled in other scenes, reports the Times of Israel.
Reports say that the Shin Bet is involved in the investigation. In response to the incident, all buses in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area have been instructed to conduct security checks.
Police said in a statement: “Large police forces are at the scenes, searching for suspects.”
“Police bomb disposal units are scanning for additional suspicious objects. We urge the public to avoid the areas and remain alert for any suspicious items,” the authorities added.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that he was being briefed by his military secretary on the unfolding incident, and would soon hold a security assessment.
