Elon Musk says IP addresses tracked in massive cyberattack on X originated from Ukraine area

Elon Musk disclosed that the cyberattack that disrupted his social media platform, X, on Monday appeared to have originated from Ukraine.

X, previously known as Twitter, suffered several major outages on Monday, which its owner, Elon Musk, linked to a “massive cyberattack.”

He made this striking revelation during an interview with Fox Business Network on Monday afternoon. This followed a series of outages and technical issues that plagued X throughout the day.

“Well, we don’t we’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Elon Musk stated during the interview.

Earlier in the day, Musk confirmed that X had been targeted by a “massive cyberattack.”

Elon Musk addressed the situation on X, stating: “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”

The disruption affected users across the globe, with reports of difficulties accessing the app and website starting as early as 5:30 a.m. ET.

In a post on X, Musk suggested that the attack was so extensive that it was likely carried out by a “coordinated group” or possibly even a foreign nation.

His concerns seemed to be validated when the hacker group Dark Storm Team allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a post on X Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity firm SpyoSecure reported that they had communicated with the leader of Dark Storm Team, who admitted to launching a DDoS attack against X.
