The alleged Maine mass shooter who claimed the lives of 18 people, Robert Card, was recently admitted to a mental hospital. The 40-year-old Army Reserve veteran and firearms instructor reportedly heard voices in his head over the summer. He also threatened to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, Maine. He was admitted to the mental hospital for two weeks before being released. It is not clear what type of treatment he received in the hospital or if there was any “red flag” law exercised on him.
He is now suspected of taking at least 18 lives in Lewiston, Maine. The shootings took place at a sports bar and a bowling alley. Surveillance photos show him utilizing an AR-style rifle. For context, the entire state of Maine only recorded 18 homicides for the entire year in both 2019 and 2020 respectively. As of the writing of this article, Robert Card is still on the run from authorities. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.
