UK’s Online Safety Act May Be Canary In The Coalmine For Canada Under Online Harms Act

We need to talk about Julie Sweeney.
She’s a 53-year-old English woman who used to live in Church Lawton, Cheshire, and she once had a Facebook account. Today, she’s in prison, serving a 15-month sentence after being convicted under new Criminal Code provisions in the United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act.
From all available accounts, Ms. Sweeney had—at least until this summer—lived without causing any trouble or having any negative interactions with the local constabulary. Then, on Aug. 3, she lost her temper during the height of the British riots that ensued following the murders of little girls in a Taylor Swift dance class and wrote something really nasty on a local community group Facebook page.
“Don’t protect the mosques,” she posted to the 5,100-member group. “Blow the mosque up with the adults in it.”
That’s a very ugly thing to say and within hours one individual who read it complained to the police, who promptly arrested Ms. Sweeney. According to the Crown prosecutor, upon being taken into custody, Ms. Sweeney told officers, “I’m not being rude but there are a lot of people saying it.”
That’s not good. But it is important to note that while there was indeed violence directed towards the mosque, Ms. Sweeney’s comments related to the aftermath. There is no evidence which I can find in the coverage of the case that her post inspired anyone to do harm to the building, to anyone in or around it, or that it became a rallying cry of any kind. Nor was there any proof offered that she seriously wished for the mosque “with the adults in it” to be blown up.
We can all agree that it was a truly dreadful thing to say. And we should all acknowledge that, other than writing and hitting “send,” Ms. Sweeney’s crime is entirely about something hideous that she said—in a post later deleted—not something she did or inspired someone to do.
She admitted in court that the post was made in anger, that it was unacceptable, and that she didn’t intend to inspire fear which, if you were a regular attendee at the mosque, you likely would have felt if you read it.
People can debate whether statements of that nature should be censured by civil society through shaming, shunning, and blocking or through the intervention of the state.
What really catches the eye in this case, though, is the intensity with which the presiding judge punished her upon accepting her guilty plea.
According to the Daily Mail, her lawyer had told the court that Ms. Sweeney “accepts it was stupid.”
“This was a single comment on a single day,” he said.
“She lives a quiet, sheltered life in Cheshire and has not troubled the courts in her long life. Her character references show she lives a kind and compassionate lifestyle. She has been primary carer for her husband since 2015.”
The judge said he took Sweeney’s good character and what he termed a “heart-rending” letter from her husband into account but that “even people like you need to go to prison because a message must go out that, if you do these terrible acts, the court will say to you, “You must go to prison.”
Really? Even if one thinks speech should be a matter for the Criminal Code, wouldn’t it seem more appropriate for the outcome to be something along the lines of a summary conviction or a suspended sentence with a ban on using social media?
Sending Ms. Sweeney to prison, particularly when the UK’s prisons are so overcrowded the government was already preparing to release thousands of criminals early, really speaks to the mindset of the Crown and the judge when it comes to cracking down on online speech.
Clearly this sort of speech has, in their view, become a more serious matter than common physical assault, the sentence for which is a maximum of six months, which can be elevated up to two years if motivated by race or religion.
Why should Canadians care? Because Ms. Sweeney and her nation’s Online Safety Act may very well be the canaries in our coalmine.
Justice Minister Araf Virani, architect of Canada’s Online Harms Act, has already cited the UK experience as something that has informed his approach. To be fair, he hasn’t said he agrees with it all, but he is the man who has been appointing the judges who will be sentencing people convicted of Bill C-63’s new offences once they become law. He will also be in charge of hiring the Human Rights Commissioner, big job given it will be tasked with managing thousands of complaints from people made to feel uncomfortable by something someone posts online.
When that’s done, he’ll be looking for someone to fill the role of Digital Safety Commissioner to patrol how social media companies in Canada manage speech deemed to be problematic.
If those appointees see the world the same way Ms. Sweeney’s judge does—that speech is more harmful than action—some very interesting times are just around Canada’s corner.

Exclusive — JD Vance on ‘This Joy Thing’: Democrats ‘Say They Are Joyful,’ Yet Actual Message ‘Dark and Ominous’
VALDOSTA, Georgia — Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), former President Donald Trump’s running mate, told Breitbart News exclusively that despite Democrats’ message of “joy” around their new candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, the truth is their message is actually “dark and ominous.” Democrats, of course, used the word “joy” dozens of times at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) as they keep pushing the concept as a theme for Harris’s nascent campaign.
“About this joy thing, dude, the thing I don’t understand is they say they are joyful,” JD Vance said in an exclusive interview last week at the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. “Yet you actually watch their convention, it’s actually pretty dark and ominous. Their entire pitch is not ‘we’re going to lower your gas prices, we’re going to lower your food prices, we’re going to bring back manufacturing jobs from China.’ They can’t say that because Kamala Harris hasn’t done that. Their entire argument is that if you vote for Donald Trump and you want to change the direction of this country, you’re a bad person. I think waging war on the citizens of your own country and saying they are bad people for their electoral choices, that’s not joyful — that’s very, very dark. And unfortunately, that’s where the Democratic Party is going. So they can talk about joy all they want, but I think most Americans who watched that convention didn’t see a whole lot of joy.”
When asked to contrast the two visions for the country, the Democrat vision and the Republican vision, Vance said the GOP vision he and Trump are offering is “very simple.”
“It’s if you work hard and play by the rules, you ought to be able to raise your family and have a good life in this country,” Vance said. “You ought to be able to work at a good job where you’re paid a fair wage. You ought to be able grow up in a community with safety and security. You ought to be able to send your kids to schools where they are not indoctrinated. And you ought to be able to build a life in a neighborhood that is not overrun with Mexican drug cartels and fentanyl trafficking.”
But, when it comes to Democrats, Vance said their vision is that anyone who votes for Trump is somehow a “bad person.”
“And I think their vision is frankly that they — I don’t know what their vision is. I don’t want to put words in their mouth,” Vance said. “But their vision appears to be that you are a good person if you vote the right way and you are a bad person if you vote the wrong way. As far as I can tell, it’s like Pete Buttigieg talked about this [at the DNC], it’s like politics is everything in your life and that you can find redemption and you can find meaning and you can find purpose. I think Republicans, our attitude towards politics is we want to have an effective government because we want to have safe streets and a strong economy, but politics is not where most people find their meaning nor should they.”

Gold Star Families Blast Harris: ‘Disgracefully Twisted’ Cemetery Visit
Former President Donald Trump released a statement from the Gold Star families of the 13 fallen United States service members who were killed during the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
In a post on X, Trump shared a joint statement from Misty Fuoco, the sister of Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole Gee; Cheryl Juels, the aunt of Gee; Christy Shamblin, the mother-in-law of Gee; Mark Schmitz, the father of Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz; Jaclyn Schmitz, the stepmother of Schmitz; Herman Lopez, the father of Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez; Jim McCollum, the father of Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum; Steve Nikoui, the father of Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui; Coral Doolittle, the mother of Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto Sanchez; Darin Hoover, the father of Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover; and Kelly Barnett, the mother of Hoover.
The families wrote in their joint statement that Vice President Kamala Harris’s statement labeling Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the family’s lost loved ones and fallen servicemembers a “political stunt” was “false, hypocritical, and disrespectful.”
In the statement, the families added that Harris had “disgracefully twisted this sacred moment into a political ploy.”
“Today, Gold Star Families who lost their loved ones in the Harris-Biden Administration’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan released the following joint statement and heartfelt video messages in a direct response to Kamala Harris’ false, hypocritical, and disrespectful statement attacking President Trump,” the statement from the families began.

“We, the families of the brave service members who were tragically killed in the Abbey Gate bombing, are appalled by Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent attempts to politicize President Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery,” the statement continued. “President Trump was invited by us, the Gold Star families, to attend the solemn ceremonies commemorating the three-year anniversary of our children’s deaths. He was there to honor their sacrifice, yet Vice President Harris has disgracefully twisted this sacred moment into a political ploy.”
Trump responded to the statement from the families by thanking them for coming “together as one” and for thanking him for attending the ceremony at the cemetery and blasted Harris and President Joe Biden for their “incompetence” and for being why the fallen service members were “no longer with us”:

In Afghanistan, you don’t take the Soldiers out first, you take the Soldiers out last. This would be Military 101, the most basic, and the “leaders” of that Disaster should be immediately fired. We have FOOLS in the White House, and now, they are trying to solve the Hostage Crisis in Israel. Guess how that’s going to turn out?
The joint statement from the families comes after Trump posted videos from the Gold Star families on both Truth Social and X, in which the families blasted Harris for her statement attacking Trump for his visit to the cemetery.
Harris’s statement criticizing Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery came days after NPR released an article claiming that officials from the Trump campaign had been involved in a “verbal and physical altercation” with a cemetery official who had tried to prevent the Trump campaign from being able to film and take photos in Section 60 of the cemetery.

German Ruling Coalition Crushed In Regional Elections As AfD Scores First Victory For German Right-Wing Party Since WWII
Two months after the European political establishment suffered a crushing blow in the French elections, on Sunday afternoon we witnessed another demonstration of just how unpopular Europe’s political elite has become when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s ruling coalition was crushed in two regional elections in eastern Germany on Sunday, with populist parties on both the right and left winning about half the votes in both Thuringia and Saxony.

The Alternative for Germany, often defined as “far-right” by most liberal media outlets, is on course for victory in Thuringia on 30.5%, according to projections Sunday for public broadcaster ARD; it represents the first victory for a German right-wing party on a state ballot since World War II (history buffs may recall that Thuringia is where the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, aka NSDAP, won their first state election in 1929).

What is just as shocking was the voter revulsion to Germany’s ruling coalition: the three parties in Scholz’s ruling alliance — the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democrats — between them got less than 15% in each of the two states, while the FDP missed the 5% threshold for getting into either regional parliament and the Greens fell short in Thuringia. The only mainstream party to do relatively well was the conservative CDU, which is projected to win in Saxony – by the narrowest of margin vs the ADP – and finish second in Thuringia.

Alice Weidel, a co-leader of the AfD, called the party’s performance “historic” and “a requiem” for the coalition in Berlin and said voters clearly want the AfD in government as the strongest party in Thuringia. Scholz’s coalition “should be asking itself if it can even continue in office,” Weidel told ARD. While it’s unlikely to be able to convince any other party to join it in coalition, with more than a third of the seats in the state parliament it could potentially block major decisions such as judicial appointments.
It’s not just the right that is soaring: in Sunday’s voting, a new far-left party, the Buendnis Sahra Wagenknecht, was on 15.8% in Thuringia and 12% in Saxony, according to early projections and exit polling. Founded only in January after Wagenknecht split from the Left party, it’s likely to play a key role in attempts by mainstream parties to keep the AfD out of power in Thuringia.
Today’s results are the latest bitter blow to German chancellor Scholz and his deeply unpopular government and highlight the risk it faces ahead of the next national election due in just over a year. The picture looks equally dire for another state ballot in three weeks in Brandenburg: the region that surrounds the capital Berlin and is home to Scholz’s Potsdam constituency.

After months of squabbling over spending priorities, nationwide support for the three ruling parties has dwindled to record lows, while support for parties opposing financial and weapons supplies to Ukraine continues to soar. Backing for the conservative CDU/CSU alliance is on around 32% – roughly the same as the SPD, Greens and FDP combined – and the AfD is in second place on about 18%.
According to Bloomberg, the crushing defeat for the unpopular ruling parties in Saxony and Thuringia could prompt renewed calls for an early general election and fuel debate about whether Scholz is the right man to lead the Social Democrats into the ballot next September.
Kevin Kuehnert, the SPD general secretary, said the results in the two regions also send a message to the national government in Berlin: “We need to explain and communicate our policies more and much better, this applies not only for Saxony and Thuringia but for Germany as a whole,” Kuehnert told ZDF in a TV interview, adding that “we must become more self-confident within the ruling coalition and show much clearer to voters what the SPD stands for.” Which of course, is not the problem: Germany as a whole knows very well what SPD’s policies are, and is revolting against them.
Despite its victory in Thuringia, the AfD, which Germany’s authorities have classified as “right-wing extremist” in both regions that voted Sunday as well as nearby Saxony-Anhalt, has no clear path to forming a government as all other political groups have ruled out cooperating with the party — a firewall similar to the one that thwarted Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally in France after President Emmanuel Macron called a snap legislative election in June. That should limit any impact on financial markets, which were unsettled by the rise in popularity of French fringe parties.
Wagenknecht, whose party’s policies include stopping aid for Ukraine and curbing immigration, again ruled out any cooperation with the AfD in Thuringia. She indicated that she was ready to govern in a coalition with the CDU and the SPD.
“I don’t think that we’re seen by voters as an AfD light,” she told ZDF. “We are simply closing a representation gap in the political spectrum.”
The CDU’s solid performance Sunday could also impact the process of choosing a conservative chancellor candidate. The leader of the party, Friedrich Merz, seems likely to secure the nomination and can claim some credit for the success in Saxony.
However, a number of other hopefuls can’t yet be ruled out, including North Rhine-Westphalia Premier Hendrik Wuest and Bavaria Premier Markus Soeder, who leads the Christian Social Union, the CDU’s sister party in the southern region.
Merz has said the CDU and CSU will decide on their joint candidate after the Brandenburg vote. The final state election before the next national ballot is at the beginning of March in Hamburg, the port city where Scholz used to be mayor and his SPD rules in coalition with the Greens.
Some 3.3 million people were eligible to vote in Saxony, which borders Poland and the Czech Republic, and about 1.7 million in Thuringia.

Could the Zionist State of Israel Disappear Within a Year?

In a stunning interview with Judge Andrew Napolitano, former CIA Analyst Larry Johnson quotes high-level Israeli government officials as stating their concern that if Israel maintains its current warmongering ways, the Zionist State could disappear within one year. Johnson also describes the radical religious zealotry of many Israelis behind the nation’s infatuation with war. (A very similar zealotry exists within a majority of evangelical churches, by the way.)

Johnson also explains why the miscreant Benjamin Netanyahu will never end Israel’s wars: He knows that as soon as the war(s) ends, he will be arrested and tried for multiple criminal acts within Israel (not counting the international war crimes of which he is accused) and probably spend the rest of his life in prison. Bottom line: Netanyahu is purposely keeping Israel’s wars alive for his own personal self-preservation.
Here are some of the excerpts from Judge Nap’s interview with Larry Johnson:
Napolitano: Is Israel committing National Suicide, Larry?
Johnson: Sure appears that way. You know when you’re in a fight, and particularly in a war, the last thing you want to do is to be fighting a civil war, be warring against each other at home.
You’ve got the head of the military, basically the Israeli military, the IDF spokesman, coming out and opposing Netanyahu. You’ve got the head of Mossad opposing Netanyahu, and Mossad is like the Israeli version of the CIA. You have the Shin Bet, which is, I describe it as, it’s like the FBI with a CIA twist, because it’s really, it’s not so much a law enforcement outfit as it is a domestic intelligence/domestic security outfit. All of them are coming out and condemning Netanyahu. And Netanyahu in turn has been calling them cowards and weaklings.
And then in addition to that, you’ve got some very prominent members or former members of the Israeli Defense Force. There’s General Yitzhak Brik, he put an op-ed in Haaretz over the weekend. And, boy, he didn’t pull any punches. He came out and said that Israel, if it keeps on this path, it’s going to collapse within a year, that the country will come apart at the seams. [Emphasis added]
Napolitano: Well, some of this stuff that General Brik said is strategic, and some of it is personal. For example, he said of Prime Minister Netanyahu, “He has lost his humanity, morality, norms, values and sense of responsibility.” That’s about as harsh as you can get. He’s not talking about Netanyahu’s personality; he’s talking about his decisions to slaughter innocents and to use reservists and the IDF with which to do so.
Johnson: Right.
Napolitano: Does Netanyahu and his crew have an academic or theological guru, a rabbi, who preaches all of this at the same time he preaches blowing up mosques and busloads of Arabs?
Johnson: Yeah, not Netanyahu. Netanyahu, he’s all about power and taking care of himself. But the Smotrich and the Ben-Gvir, yes, this Rabbi Dov Lior, he’s been quite influential and quite extreme. So, there’s a religious dimension to this; we can’t discount that. I think the tendency is for many Western pundits not to delve into the religious aspects of this. But they’re real as far as these people are concerned. And that’s what’s driving them. I mean, part of their premise is that they actually have a covenant with God, and that that was established 3,000 years ago, and they have a right to this land, and they have the right to do whatever they need to do to eliminate those who are not chosen of God to live there. And so, when you take a religious belief like that and then translate it into policy, of course you can kill Palestinian children, because they’re just refuse in the way that you need to clear out.
And so that’s part of what has the head of Shin Bet so alarmed. And he said, “Look, I grew up in a family of Holocaust survivors, and, you know, we believed in never again.” But he goes, “My G-d, what I’m seeing coming out of these Jewish mouths about Jewish supremacy, and not just that, ‘Hey, we’re smarter, we’re more accomplished,’ but actually, ‘We are human beings; you are not human beings.’” He says that mindset is what alarms him, and that has taken hold among a big segment within Israel. That’s the danger.
Napolitano: Is this a majority view, this Messianic belief? “God the Father gave us this land, and we can crush and destroy any thing or any person who stands in our way. We can establish our own morality because we are the chosen.”
Johnson: Yeah, apparently. At least it’s over 50% now within Israel. And again, that number may go up as Israelis who were secular are leaving Israel, coming back to the United States, going to Europe, going to other places, because they don’t embrace that. As they leave, that means those who do believe that become a larger percentage of the population.
Note: Within a few months after October 7, it was well documented that over 500,000 Israelis had left Israel out of a total population of just over 9 million. But just yesterday, Col. Douglas Macgregor suggested to Judge Andrew Napolitano that Israel’s population today is 4½ to 5 million. If that’s true, it would mean that around half of the Israeli population has fled the country since Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza began.
The IDF are not killing guys that are decked out in body armor and carrying, you know, RPGs. They’re killing women and children by and large, and the images are appalling. They’re horrific. I mean, just in recent days, the actual pictures of babies burned. I mean it’s sickening. Babies missing chunks of their heads.
Now we heard the Israelis after October 7th talk about, “Oh, Hamas killed 40 children.” We’ve never seen a single picture; we’ve never heard a single name. But what’s coming out of Palestine is names and pictures that are horrific. And it’s establishing a reality. And this is taking a toll on these Israeli soldiers.
Napolitano: Netanyahu wants war! Netanyahu and his religious zealotry folks believe that this is the time God ordained for them to kill everybody that’s impeding them.
Johnson: The United States could put a halt to this immediately. You tell Netanyahu, “Okay, the military aid is done, and we’re cutting you off economically. You’re not going to get another drop until you sit down and do a serious negotiation with the Palestinians.”

General Yitzhak Brik, put an op-ed in Haaretz [an Israeli newspaper] over the weekend. And, boy, he didn’t pull any punches. He came out and said that Israel, if it keeps on this path, it’s going to collapse within a year.
This Israeli general is not the first Israeli to say this. And he won’t be the last. Many Middle East experts are saying that Israel is on a path of self-destruction. If Col. Macgregor is correct in suggesting that half of Israel’s population has already fled the country, the only logical reason for such a massive and spontaneous exodus would be because they expect the State of Israel to soon collapse.

But both Christian and Jewish Zionists believe that God wants them to kill all of the Palestinian people in the name of their Messiah.

An ASCAT pass from yesterday evening showed a broad area of gale force winds within a large convective band, and this was incorporated into this final forecast for the merged extratropical low. The post-tropical low of former Hone will continue to move westward and lose forward motion over the next 12 hours, eventually stalling tonight as it becomes aligned with the upper-level low. The deep low will then drift northward near the International Date Line on days 2 through 4 and likely dissipate by day 5. The post-tropical low is expected to maintain gale force winds in the northern semicircle for the next couple of days. If convection does reform over the center, there is a chance that post-tropical Hone could regain tropical characteristics over the next 2 days or so. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center will closely monitor for redevelopment and the need to resume bulletins east of the International Date Line. Since Hone is now a post-tropical low and this is the final advisory from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, the Tropical Storm Watch for Kure and Midway Atolls has been discontinued. However, these atolls could experience gale force winds during the next couple of days. to 18 hours, then drift northward until dissipation in several days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.
Little change in strength of the post-tropical low is forecast
during the next 48 hours.
