On Wednesday, European Union left-wing MEPs disrupted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s speech by singing the anti-fascist hymn “Bella Ciao.” The staged protest sparked mayhem in the European Parliament, with EU President Roberta Metsola struggling to maintain order and declaring to the unruly legislators, “This is not Eurovision.”
The incident occurred during a plenary session in the European Parliament while PM Orban visited Strasbourg to outline Hungary’s priorities, according to Malta Today.
During his address to the EU Council presidency, the Hungarian Prime Minister, who has been an outspoken opponent of progressive parliament MPs, did not mince words, stating unequivocally that the EU “needs to change” its policies as it faced “the most serious period” in modern history.
Orban issued an urgent warning regarding economic stagnation and urged for action to enhance competitiveness. He also criticized the EU climate change-focused Green Deal as being associated with high energy prices and sluggish development, suggesting taxpayers are facing an unnecessary burden. Additionally, Orban chastised the EU’s trade restrictions, particularly the tariffs that were recently approved on electric vehicles manufactured in China, which Hungary opposed.
Left-wing MEPs have lambasted Prime Minister Orban for his anti-war attitude in the Russia-Ukraine conflict after he indicated that Hungary would not financially back Kyiv or Moscow, infuriating EU parliamentarians who have pledged to support Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and his efforts.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Orban brought up concerns about illegal immigration and proposed a policy that would implement restrictions on migrants who claim to be seeking asylum. The proposal calls for the establishment of “outside hotspots” in neighboring countries to process asylum applications, ensuring that only those who have been approved are permitted to access European territory. His comments were disrupted by loud boos from progressive MEPs.
