Only 4 Amsterdam pogrom suspects still in custody after 63 detained

Despite the initial detention of 63 individuals in connection with violent attacks against Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans in Amsterdam on Thursday night, only four remain in custody as of Saturday, according to The New York Post.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Chief Prosecutor René de Beukelaer confirmed that the remaining individuals in custody are expected to be tried for public violence under a fast-track hearing process. Authorities will also be analyzing footage to identify further suspects and determine whether the violence was organized.

“The investigation that we started during the night focuses on suspects who can be seen on the film footage,” said De Beukelaer.

“We are also investigating whether there are connections between these suspects and how they came to these violent actions. We are also investigating whether it was organized,” he added.

Geert Wilders, the leader of the largest party in the Dutch government, posted on X in response to the attacks: “I am speechless. Amsterdam Police just confirmed that NO ONE has been arrested during the Islamic Jewhunt in Amsterdam Thursday night. All arrests have been made before and during the soccer match and NOT during the pogrom.”

Furthermore, the Dutch government is investigating if there were warning signs that were missed leading up to the attacks. Justice Minister David van Weel confirmed in a letter to Parliament that “an investigation is still being conducted on possible warning signs from Israel.” One senior Israeli security officer stated that the government identified a “flare-up” on Dutch social media prior to the match.

“Due to this, the Mossad passed a warning to security services in the Netherlands with a request to immediately and significantly reinforce the security for Israelis in the area of the stadium and across the city, with an emphasis placed on hotels where the fans were known to be staying,” the official told the Times of Israel.

The assaults left five people hospitalized and approximately 30 others with minor injuries. Prosecutors anticipate additional arrests as the investigation progresses.
