The former Florida attorney general is Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Justice, signaling a sharp pivot in its leadership.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that Pam Bondi, former attorney general of Florida, will be his nominee for U.S. attorney general. The announcement came after Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., withdrew himself from consideration earlier in the day amid intensifying scrutiny over a pending House Ethics Committee report.

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans—Not anymore,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years—She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Gaetz Withdraws Amid Senate Concerns
Gaetz announced his withdrawal as his chances of securing Senate approval diminished. The House Ethics Committee is reportedly preparing to release a report on its investigation into Gaetz, which centers on allegations of sexual misconduct and other alleged crimes. Gaetz has consistently denied the accusations, which were also previously investigated by the Department of Justice without charges being filed.
“While I remain fully committed to serving the America First agenda, I believe the focus of the confirmation process should be on the future of the Department of Justice rather than distractions caused by false allegations against me,” Gaetz said in a statement.
Bondi’s Path to Confirmation
Bondi, a close ally of Trump and a vocal supporter during his previous administration, will require Senate approval to assume the role of attorney general. Known for her staunch “America First” stance, Bondi has been an outspoken critic of federal overreach and a proponent of conservative legal reforms.
If confirmed, Bondi will oversee a Department of Justice that has been at the center of partisan controversies. Trump’s statement emphasized her role in reorienting the DOJ’s mission to align with his vision of law enforcement priorities.
A Polarized Appointment
Bondi’s nomination is expected to spark fierce debate in the Senate, where Democrats have criticized Trump’s prior handling of the Justice Department and are likely to scrutinize her record and alignment with Trump’s policies. Republicans, however, are poised to rally behind Bondi’s credentials and her history as a tough-on-crime prosecutor.
As Trump prepares to take office in January, the Bondi nomination underscores his commitment to reshaping federal agencies to reflect his policy priorities. The Senate confirmation process will be one of the early tests of Trump’s relationship with the newly configured Congress.
