BREAKING: Color revolution breaks out in Romania after conservative candidate, associates arrested

Human Events Daily host Jack Posobiec broke down the situation unfolding in Romania on Wednesday, in what he called a “color revolution” shaking the nation’s political landscape, with the controversy around the recent detention of Călin Georgescu, the frontrunner in Romania’s upcoming presidential election.

“The leading conservative candidate, populist nationalist there in Romania, on the cusp of their presidential election—remember, this was the election that JD Vance talked about being overturned when he was there at the Munich conference, and lambasted them, the EU, for not standing up for traditional European values and actually the democratic goals they claim are so important to them,” Posobiec said, referencing Vance’s remarks made earlier in February.

“Calin Georgescu has been arrested,” said Posobiec, who later added, “people need to understand this, this is exactly what JD Vance was warning about when he went to Munich, and then again when he was at CPAC he said, those people who arrest and jail candidates, guess what, we saw that right here in the United States in 2024, didn’t we?”

“Donald Trump, arrested four times, got one mugshot out of it. Donald Trump supporters, arrested, raided for years, in some cases held for years without court, without even a trial, they were held, these patriots. Understand what it was: a patriot purge of the United States of America. That’s what the J6ers were, and so we understood this. We’ve seen it again and again, the raiding of homes, the arresting of political candidates.”

Posobiec pointed out what is happening in Romania and in the United States, drawing a parallel between the arrest of Georgescu and the charges levied against Trump and his supporters, saying that a “color revolution” was kicking off in the country’s capital Bucharest.

Joining Posobiec on the broadcast from Romania was George Simon, president of the Alliance of the Union of Romanians Party, who explained Georgescu’s detention in greater detail: “He’s now not allowed to speak on social networks and not allowed to give interviews. It’s quite a dictatorship here,” Simon said, also adding that what was happening was a coup d’etat.

Georgescu, who publicly claimed the entire operation is politically motivated, was detained by Romanian authorities on Tuesday.

A post on Georgescu’s Facebook page read, “Călin Georgescu was going to file his new candidacy for the Presidency. About 30 minutes ago, the system stopped him in traffic and he was pulled over for questioning at the Prosecutor General’s Office! Where is democracy, where are the partners who must defend democracy?”

The arrest raised major red flags about the manipulation of the electoral process in Romania, according to Romanian news outlet Digi24, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Georgescu and conducted searches at properties connected to him, including those of his associates such as mercenary leader Horatiu Potra and Georgescu’s personal bodyguard.

Investigators are reportedly looking into the financing of Georgescu’s campaign, with at least 27 individuals now implicated in an investigation that includes charges like subverting Romania’s constitutional order and providing false statements about campaign funding.

Despite the official prosecutor’s statement not naming Georgescu or his aides directly, the politician has openly said the entire operation is an effort to block his presidential candidacy.

US Vice President JD Vance, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, criticized Romania’s highest court for invalidating elections and warned about the dangers of such actions in the context of European democracy.

“When we see European courts canceling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we’re holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard,” Vance said.

He further added, “To many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion, or God forbid vote a different way, or even worse, win an election.”
