US calls for ‘thorough’ probe into killing of American in West Bank

The United States wants Israel to conduct a “thorough” investigation into the killing of a Turkish-American citizen in the West Bank last week, the State Department said on Monday.

“We have urged a swift, thorough and transparent investigation, and are urgently working to get more information as possible as it relates to the circumstances of her death,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told journalists.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, was “shot in the head” while participating in a demonstration in Beita in the West Bank on Friday, the United Nations rights office has said.

The Israeli military said its forces “responded with fire toward a main instigator of violent activity who hurled rocks at the forces and posed a threat to them” during the protest.

Eygi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian organization, and was in Beita on Friday for a weekly demonstration against Israeli settlements, according to ISM.

The group on Saturday dismissed claims that ISM activists threw rocks at Israeli forces as “false” and said the demonstration was peaceful.

In recent years, pro-Palestinian demonstrators have frequently held weekly protests against the Eviatar settlement outpost overlooking Beita, which is backed by far-right Israeli ministers.

Reasons to Go for Mobile Threat Defense
Economics News Politics

Reasons to Go for Mobile Threat Defense

Mobile phones have evolved into an extension of who we are in the current digital era. We use them for everything, including financial management and email monitoring. But there’s also a higher risk associated with this greater dependency. The mobile threat defense (MTD) is useful in this situation. Let’s examine five strong arguments for why MTD implementation is essential for people and businesses.

1.      Protecting Your Digital Life

A wealth of personal data is stored on our devices. These gadgets include a plethora of sensitive information, ranging from texts and images to bank account information and business communications. This information is susceptible to hackers who are always coming up with new ways to get past our digital defenses if it isn’t properly protected.

Mobile Threat Defense offers a way to protect private and work related data from being accessed by third parties. It employs some of the most advanced ways of detecting threats that may affect your data and eradicating them before they can cause harm. With such a protective orientation, one can be safe and have a personal space in the rapidly integrating society and the Net.

Furthermore, MTD is intended to recognize and neutralize newly developing risks in addition to safeguarding against established ones. This ability to adapt is essential in a world where cyberthreats are ever-changing. You may use your mobile device with confidence since MTD offers a strong security for your digital assets by remaining one step ahead of possible attackers.

2.      Safeguarding Business Operations

Smartphones and tablets are gradually becoming indispensable means in the contemporary work environment. Employees use mobile devices to retrieve and input business information as well as communicate with customers and or complete numerous official tasks. However, such flexibility has its own disadvantageous features. Lack of security in mobile devices can be a gateway through which hackers try to access the business’ networks.

Mobile Threat Defense offers a total set of measures to counter the challenge. It has a layered protection approach that targets to protect the gadget, the networks that it connects and the applications which run on it. Confidential data belonging to the company is shielded at all possible edges, be it in transit across the networks or in storage on the device.

Moreover, MTD solutions frequently provide management tools that let IT departments impose security guidelines on all business devices. This centralized control aids in keeping the organization’s security posture constant. Additionally, it facilitates prompt reaction to any dangers, lowering the possibility of data breaches and guaranteeing business continuity in the event of cyberattacks.

3.      Combating the Rise of Mobile Malware

Mobile malware threat is incrementing day by day with the increment in the usage of mobile devices. As smartphones and tablets attract more and more attention due to the fact they are a treasure trove of individuals’ financial and personal information, they have become more and more popular targets. The dangers are numerous and dangerous: Malware that collects your information in the background, Malware that encrypts your device.

To combat these dangers unique to mobile devices, Mobile Threat Defense was created. To find dangerous apps—even ones that could elude regular app store security checks—it employs sophisticated detection techniques. MTD solutions provide protection against the most recent malware strains and attack strategies by continuously updating their threat databases.

However, MTD offers active protection in addition to detection. When a danger is detected, MTD may respond right away by shutting down the malicious application, separating compromised files, notifying the user, and offering corrective measures. This quick action is essential to stopping malware from spreading and reducing any harm to your device and data.

4.      Ensuring Secure Connectivity

We often connect to different Wi-Fi networks at cafés, airports, hotels, and other public locations in our increasingly mobile environment. These networks are convenient, but there are serious security hazards associated with them as well. Cybercriminals may use insecure or hacked Wi-Fi networks as a breeding ground to collect data or initiate attacks on devices linked to them.

Securing these connections requires the use of Mobile Threat Defense. It actively keeps an eye on network traffic, spotting unusual activity that might point to a danger. Man-in-the-middle attacks, data interceptions, and connections to known hostile services are a few examples of this. Through real-time threat detection, MTD can stop your device from connecting to risky networks or alert you to possible dangers.

Also, many of MTD systems offer the VPN (Virtual Private Network) capabilities. It generates a protective tunnel in public Wi-Fi networks, being able to encrypt all the information that you send and receive between your device and the web while being active. This encryption affords the protection of your personal data from the view of other people by making it impossible for the interceptor to decipher it, even if he/she is a cybercriminal.

5.      Compliance and Regulatory Requirements

Safeguarding confidential information is not just a recommended practice but also mandated by law in several sectors. Healthcare firms need to follow HIPAA regulations, banking institutions PCI-DSS, and businesses managing the data of EU people GDPR. Mobile device security is frequently subject to stringent restrictions under these laws, particularly when the devices are being used to access or store sensitive data.

Solutions for mobile threat defense might be extremely important in fulfilling these compliance standards. They offer the monitoring tools and security measures required to safeguard private information on mobile devices. This includes functions like remote data wiping from misplaced or stolen devices, secure communication routes, and data encryption.

Moreover, MTD systems frequently provide extensive reporting and recording capabilities. During audits, these features enable firms to show off their compliance efforts. MTD assists companies in demonstrating that they are taking a required precautions to secure sensitive data on a mobile devices by offering comprehensive records of security events, and policy enforcements, as well as threat mitigations. By doing this, the company not only complies with regulations but also gains the trust of partners and consumers who commit their data to it.

Conclusion

In our mobile-first society, mobile threat defense is a need, not a luxury. MTD provides a complete answer to the intricate security problems of the mobile era, including everything from safeguarding personal information to guaranteeing business continuity, preventing sophisticated malware to securing network connections, and adhering to legal requirements to fostering confidence. Protecting our digital lives and company operations will require putting in place strong Mobile Threat Defense as we continue to rely more and more on our mobile devices.

First robot leg with ‘artificial muscles’ jumps nimbly: study

Researchers said on Monday they had designed the first robotic leg with “artificial muscles” — oil-filled bags allowing machines to move more like humans — that can jump nimbly across a range of surfaces.

The small, disembodied robot leg was shown hopping over grass, sand and rocks in a video released alongside a new study in Nature Communications.

The researchers hope the technology can be used in the future to create humanoid robots to help out with “boring labour” around the house, study co-author Robert Katzschmann told AFP.

Conventional humanoid robots are built with motors and rigid metal joints similar to those used on factory construction lines, the robotics professor at Switzerland’s ETH Zurich university explained.

As well as being extremely expensive, such hulking robots could be dangerous if they were to enter people’s homes.

If one was to “fall on you, it is going to be quite painful”, Katzschmann said.

A future robot helper needs to be able to not just carry heavy things but “also give someone a hug or shake hands”, he added.

The Swiss-led team of researchers was inspired by the 600 muscles in the human body to create something that can walk and jump in a more fluid, agile manner.

To do this, they used “artificial muscles”, also known as electrohydraulic actuators.

These soft actuators, which resemble freezer bags, are filled with oil and have electrodes attached.

The way the liquid contracts and expands allows the technology to more closely mimic animal muscles.

The electrostatic system also means that when the robot knee is in a bent position, such as a person would have when squatting, the system uses less electricity than traditional motors, the study said.

The leg can handle rough terrain more nimbly than its rigid predecessors, according to the researchers.

It was able to jump nearly 13 centimetres (five inches), which is 40 percent of its height, the study said.

Research into electrohydraulic actuators is relatively new, with the field only emerging around six years ago.

The simplistic leg cannot currently move freely, only jumping in circles, the researchers acknowledged.

So any robots using such artificial muscles are still some way off.

But the components to make these artificial muscles are not expensive, Katzschmann said, adding that he hoped mass production could speed advancements in the years ahead.

China says to hold military drills with Russia this month

China said Monday it would hold joint military drills with Russia this month, as the allies deepen ties that have seen NATO dub Beijing an “enabler” of Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Naval and air forces will take part in the “North-Joint 2024” exercises in the skies and around the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk, off Russia’s coast, China’s defence ministry said.

“This exercise aims to deepen the strategic cooperation level between the Chinese and Russian militaries and enhance their ability to jointly deal with security threats,” the ministry said.

The two sides will send naval fleets to “relevant sea areas of the Pacific Ocean” for a joint maritime patrol, and China will also participate in Russia’s “Ocean-2024” strategic exercise, it added.

The ministry did not give a specific date when the drills will take place.

In July, the two countries held joint drills in the waters and airspace around Zhanjiang, a city in southern China’s Guangdong province.

Those drills came the same week that NATO leaders warned China had “become a decisive enabler” of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prompting Beijing to warn the US-led military bloc against “provoking confrontation”.

Russia and China have ramped up military and economic cooperation in recent years, with both railing against “Western hegemony”, particularly what they see as US domination of global affairs.

They declared a “no limits” partnership shortly before Moscow launched its offensive in Ukraine in 2022.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia’s economic and trade links with China were “yielding results” as he met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Moscow.

‘Many’ immigrants seek free ride in Europe: Poland’s Duda

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said “very many” immigrants come to Europe expecting a free ride, in an interview aired Sunday on a US political affairs programme.

The comment comes against a background of Warsaw’s accusations against Moscow that it has tried to smuggle thousands of people from Africa into Europe by flying them to Russia and sending them to the Polish border via Belarus.

“If someone comes over to Poland in the false perception that one will stay here and get everything for free and will have a better life without working, well, we do not agree to such arrivals,” said Duda.

He was speaking to conservative news host Sharyl Attkisson on Sinclair Television’s “Full Measure” programme.

Asked by Attkisson whether great numbers of people were coming to Europe expecting a free ride, Duda said “yes”.

“I think that in very many cases, we have such a situation. That’s why there is such a reaction in the West of Europe,” he added.

The interview was also available online on the programme’s website.

Since summer 2021, thousands of migrants and refugees, mainly from the Middle East, have crossed or attempted to cross the border between Belarus — an ally of Russia — and Poland, a NATO and EU member.

In May, Warsaw announced it would spend more than 2.3 billion euros ($2.5 billion) on fortifying its eastern border with Belarus that it said Russia has used to destabilise the region with hybrid attacks.

The following month, a Polish soldier on patrol at the border was fatally stabbed through a five-metre-high (16-foot) metal fence that Poland had erected in 2022.

The Polish army also reported other attacks on troops at the border.

In July, Polish lawmakers voted to allow the security forces to use lethal weapons in response to active threats, including at the tense border with Belarus.

Latvia reports Russian drone crash on NATO territory

Latvia’s president on Sunday said a Russian military drone had crashed on its territory, adding that airspace breaches had increased along NATO’s eastern borders.

The Baltic state, once ruled by the Soviet Union but now an EU and NATO member, has had tense relations with Moscow following independence, and ties have further deteriorated since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

A “Russian military drone… crashed in the eastern part of Latvia yesterday. There is an ongoing investigation,” Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said on X, formerly Twitter.

“We are in close contact with our allies. The number of such incidents is increasing along the eastern flank of NATO and we must address them collectively,” he added.

Latvia’s defence ministry said in a statement that the drone had flown into the country’s airspace from Belarus and crashed in the municipality of Rezekne.

“This situation is a confirmation that we need to continue the work we have started to strengthen Latvia’s eastern border, including the development of air defence capabilities and electronic warfare capabilities to limit the activities of UAVs of different applications,” said Defence Minister Andris Spruds.

Fellow NATO member Romania also on Sunday said a Russian attack drone targeting civilian infrastructure in neighbouring Ukraine overnight had entered its airspace.

Bucharest strongly condemned the “renewed violation” brought on by Moscow’s “illegal attacks”.

Since launching its invasion, Russia has repeatedly carried out night attacks on cities across Ukraine, frequently targeting ports in the southern Odesa region after exiting a grain export deal.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga on Sunday condemned the breaches of Romanian and Latvian airspace, calling them “a stark reminder that Russia’s aggressive actions extend beyond Ukraine”.

He added on X that Ukraine needed concrete action from allies.

“A brave collective decision to use partner air defence to intercept Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine. Stronger and faster military aid for Ukrainian warriors. Lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of weapons. Act now,” he said.

Poland has also recorded at least two cases of its airspace being violated by Russian missiles or drones attacking Ukraine, most recently in December.

Warsaw late last month declared that a flying object had intruded into its airspace but later backtracked on the claim.

In an interview with the Financial Times published last week, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Warsaw should have the right to shoot down Russian missiles targeting Ukraine before they enter Polish airspace, despite NATO opposition.

Philippines arrests pastor wanted by US for child sex trafficking

The Philippines said it arrested Sunday a pastor wanted in the United States for child sex trafficking, two weeks into a massive police manhunt for the self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God”.

Apollo Quiboloy, who has close relations with former president Rodrigo Duterte, is the founder of the Philippines-based Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church which claims millions of members.

He was charged by the US Justice Department in 2021 with sex trafficking of girls and women between the ages of 12 and 25 to work as personal assistants, or “pastorals”, who were allegedly required to have sex with him.

Quiboloy and four other sect members were taken into custody at the church’s compound in the southern city of Davao following negotiations between his representatives and the police and military, Philippine police spokeswoman Colonel Jean Fajardo told reporters.

“This afternoon they negotiated their peaceful surrender after we gave them a 24-hour ultimatum,” Fajardo said.

Four hours later Quiboloy and the four sect members were flown by military aircraft to Manila, where they will be detained to stand trial for “child abuse, sexual abuse and qualified (human) trafficking”, Fajardo added.

Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos earlier Sunday announced Quiboloy’s arrest on his official Facebook page.

Quiboloy is also sought by US authorities for bulk cash smuggling and a scheme that brought church members to the United States using fraudulently obtained visas.

They were then forced to solicit donations for a bogus charity, raising funds that were instead used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders, according to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It is not known if the United States has sought the extradition of Quiboloy, aged at least 74 according to the FBI.

A US embassy spokesman referred media queries to the Philippine authorities.

– ‘Concerted effort’ –

“This is a concerted effort of everyone involved,” Brigadier-General Nicolas Torre, the regional police chief who led the manhunt, told reporters at a news conference confirming the Quiboloy’s arrest.

“Let’s be proud. We did our job today.”

During his months-long flight from justice, Quiboloy demanded a written guarantee from Manila that he would not be subject to “extraordinary rendition” as a condition for his surrender.

The term refers to a US government practice of sending detained suspected members of terror organisations to another country for imprisonment and interrogation.

Some 2,000 police were deployed at the KOJC headquarters in Davao on August 24 to serve an arrest warrant against Quiboloy.

Duterte and his daughter — incumbent Vice President Sara Duterte who has had a falling out with President Ferdinand Marcos — had publicly criticised the police search inside the sect’s 30-hectare (70-acre) property.

The vice president condemned “the gross abuse of police power in the takeover of the KOJC compound”, and apologised to sect members for having asked them to elect Marcos to the presidency, saying “you deserve better”.

Minutes after Quiboloy’s arrest was announced, SMNI, a Philippine television station run by his sect, posted on its Facebook page pictures of members embracing uniformed police officers.

“After all the pains and struggles, it is evident that the KOJC missionaries have embraced Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s teaching to love not only their neighbours but even their enemies,” it said in a message accompanying the photos.

Venezuela says presidential opposition candidate has left country

Venezuela says presidential opposition candidate has left country

The Venezuelan government said Saturday opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who disputed President Nicolas Maduro’s July 28 reelection, has left the country to seek asylum in Spain.

Gonzalez Urrutia had been in hiding for a month, ignoring three successive summons to appear before prosecutors, saying attending the hearing could have cost his freedom.

“After taking refuge voluntarily at the Spanish embassy in Caracas a few days ago, (Gonzalez Urrutia) asked the Spanish government for political asylum,” Venezuela’s vice president said on social media, adding that Caracas had agreed to his safe passage.

Madrid’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on X that Gonzalez Urrutia “at his request” had departed on a Spanish military plane, adding that Spain was “committed to the political rights” of all Venezuelans.

Gonzalez Urrutia’s lawyer Jose Vicente Haro also confirmed to AFP that the opposition candidate had left for Spain, declining to comment further.

Venezuela has been in political crisis since authorities declared Maduro the victor of the July 28 election.

The opposition cried foul, claiming it had evidence Gonzalez Urrutia had won by a comfortable margin.

Numerous nations, including the United States, European Union and several Latin American countries, have refused to recognize Maduro as the winner without Caracas releasing detailed voting data.

After the election, Venezuelan prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Gonzalez Urrutia over his insistence that he was the rightful winner of the election.

– Disputed election results –

Lawyer Joel Garcia, who has defended opposition figures in Venezuela, said if Gonzalez Urrutia was charged with everything the government has accused him of, he could face a jail sentence of 30 years.

Authorities said Maduro had won reelection to a third, six-year term with 52 percent of the vote.

The opposition published its own voting records, which it says showed Gonzalez Urrutia winning 67 percent of the vote.

Venezuela’s electoral authority has said it cannot provide a full breakdown of the election results, blaming a cyber attack on its systems.

Observers have said there is no evidence of any such hacking.

Post-election violence in Venezuela has claimed 27 lives and left 192 people injured, while the government says it has arrested some 2,400 people.

Prior to the election, Gonzalez Urrutia was a little-known retired diplomat.

He became the last-minute presidential candidate after main opposition figure Machado was banned from running by state institutions seen as loyal to Maduro.

After Venezuela’s last election, in 2018, Maduro was proclaimed winner amid widespread accusations of fraud.

He has led the oil-rich but cash-poor country since 2013.

His tenure, which has suffered from domestic economic mismanagement as well as international sanctions, has seen GDP drop 80 percent and more than seven million of the country’s 30 million citizens emigrate.

US confirms first bird flu case without animal contact

A person in the state of Missouri has become the first in the United States to test positive for bird flu without a known exposure to infected animals, authorities said Friday.

The adult patient, who has underlying conditions, was admitted to hospital on August 22, received antiviral medications against influenza, then recovered and was discharged, according to statements from the Centers for Control and Disease Prevention and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Because the patient’s flu type appeared suspicious on an initial test, it was sent for additional testing in state and federal laboratories, which revealed it was H5, also known as avian flu or bird flu.

The person was the 14th to test positive for bird flu in the US this year, and the first without known contact with animals.

Indeed, “no H5 infection in dairy cattle has been reported in Missouri” said the Missouri health department, though “some H5 cases in commercial or backyard flocks and wild birds have been reported.”

All previous bird flu cases in the United States have been among farmworkers, including the very first, in 2022.

Bird flu is most commonly found in wild birds and poultry, but has more recently been detected in mammals, with a cattle outbreak seen across the country this year. It can occasionally infect humans through close contact or contaminated environments.

While the CDC continues to assess the risk to the public as low, “circumstances may change quickly as more information is learned,” it said.

In the decades since H5 has been found in humans, there have been rare cases where an animal source cannot be identified, but there has so far not been evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, which would significantly increase the threat level.

Old satellite to burn up over Pacific in 'targeted' re-entry first

Old satellite to burn up over Pacific in ‘targeted’ re-entry first

After 24 years diligently studying Earth’s magnetic field, a satellite will mostly burn up over the Pacific Ocean on Sunday during a “targeted” re-entry into the atmosphere, in a first for the European Space Agency as it seeks to reduce space debris.

Since launching in 2000, the Salsa satellite has helped shed light on the magnetosphere, the powerful magnetic shield that protects Earth from solar winds — and without which the planet would be uninhabitable.

According to the ESA, Salsa’s return home will mark the first-ever “targeted” re-entry for a satellite, which means it will fall back to Earth at a specific time and place but will not be controlled as it re-enters the atmosphere.

Teams on the ground have already performed a series of manoeuvres with the 550-kilogram (1,200-pound) satellite to ensure it burns up over a remote and uninhabited region of the South Pacific, off the coast of Chile.

This unique re-entry is possible because of Salsa’s unusual oval-shaped orbit. During its swing around the planet, which takes two and half days, the satellite strays as far as 130,000 kilometres (80,000 miles), and comes as close as just a few hundred kilometres.

Bruno Sousa, head of the ESA’s inner solar system missions operations unit, said it had been crucial that Salsa came within roughly 110 kilometres during its last two orbits.

“Then immediately on the next orbit, it would come down at 80 kilometres, which is the region in space already within the atmosphere, where we have the highest chance (for it) to be fully captured and burned,” he told a press conference.

When a satellite starts entering the atmosphere at around 100 kilometres above sea level, intense friction with atmospheric particles — and the heat this causes — starts making them disintegrate.

But some fragments can still make it back down to Earth.

– Fear of ‘cascading’ space junk –

The ESA is hoping to pinpoint where Salsa, roughly the size of a small car, re-enters the atmosphere to within a few hundred metres.

Because the satellite is so old, it does not have fancy new tech — like a recording device — making tracking this part tricky.

A plane will be flying at an altitude of 10 kilometres to watch the satellite burn up — and track its falling debris, which is expected to be just 10 percent of its original mass.

Salsa is just one of four satellites that make up the ESA’s Cluster mission, which is coming to an end. The other three are scheduled for a similar fate in 2025 and 2026.

The ESA hopes to learn from these re-entries which type of materials do not burn up in the atmosphere, so that “in the future we can build satellites that can be totally evaporated by this process,” Sousa said.

Scientists have been sounding the alarm about space junk, which is the debris left by the enormous number of dead satellites and other missions that continue orbiting our planet.

Last year the ESA signed a “zero debris” charter for its missions from 2030.

There are two main risks from space junk, according to the ESA’s space debris system engineer Benjamin Bastida Virgili.

“One is that in orbit, you have the risk that your operational satellite collides with a piece of space debris, and that creates a cascading effect and generates more debris, which would then put in risk other missions,” he said.

The second comes when the old debris re-enters the atmosphere, which happens almost daily as dead satellite fragments or rocket parts fall back to Earth.

Designing satellites that completely burn up in the atmosphere will mean there is “no risk for the population,” Bastida Virgili emphasised.

But there is little cause for alarm. According to the ESA, the chance of a piece of space debris injuring someone on the ground is less than one in a hundred billion.

This is 65,000 times lower than the odds of being struck by lightning.
