JD Vance Fact Checks CNN’s Dana Bash: Tim Walz ‘Knew He Was Going to Iraq’

Republican vice presidential candidate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), fact-checked CNN’s Dana Bash, telling her that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) “knew he was going to Iraq.”

During an interview with Bash on Sunday, Vance clarified that Walz “lied” when he had said he did not know his unit would be deployed to Iraq at the time he had “decided to retire.”

“On the question of when he left the National Guard, he filed his election paperwork, February 10th, 2005,” Bash told him. “That was a month before the National Guard even announced that it was possible that they would deploy to Iraq and it ended up being two months — he retired two months before they actually got the paperwork.”

“But, on CNN last night, Dana, one of the people who was actually in charge of him said they knew they were going to deploy to Iraq in February of 2004, excuse me, fall of 2004,” Vance said. “So, he knew he was going to Iraq, he decided to quit, to retire, whatever word you want to use.”

Bash interjected to note that Walz had retired.

“Whatever, because he wanted to run for Congress,” Vance continued. “He lied about that. He said that when he decided to retire, he did not know he was going to Iraq. That is another untruth, as even his senior military officer said. So again, I’m not criticizing the service, I’m criticizing the dishonesty.”

Walz has faced criticism over reports that have shown he retired from the military before his unit was deployed to Iraq, despite having knowledge of the possibility his unit could be deployed to Iraq.

As Breitbart News has reported, an archived press release from 2005 from Walz’s campaign shows that the “National Guard Public Affairs Office” had “announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard”:

On Thursday, March 17 the National Guard Public Affairs Office announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard. First District congressional candidate Tim Walz currently holds the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the 1-125th Battalion, which is based in New Ulm and largely composed of men and women from southern Minnesota. The announcement from the National Guard PAO specified that all or a portion of Walz’s battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years.

Walz, who teaches Global Geography at Mankato West High School, has been an active member of the National Guard since 1981. He has been previously deployed during his 23 years in the National Guard, including an eight month deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom.

When asked about his possible deployment to Iraq Walz said, “I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on specifics of the deployment.”

Although his tour of duty in Iraq might coincide with his campaign for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional seat, Walz is determined to stay in the race. “As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington DC or in Iraq.”

“I don’t want to speculate on what shape my campaign will take if I am deployed, but I have no plans to drop out of the race. I am fortunate to have a strong group of enthusiastic supporters and a very dedicated and intelligent wife. Both will be a major part of my campaign, whether I am in Minnesota or Iraq.”

If called to duty, Walz would leave behind his wife Gwen and four year old daughter, Hope.

Walz went on to retire from the military, while his unit ended up deploying to Iraq.

Breitbart News’s Kristina Wong has also previously reported that Walz did not retire as a command sergeant major, or an E-9, as he has previously suggested. Instead, at the time of his retirement, Walz was a master sergeant, or an E-8.

Listen: Tim Walz Falsely Calls Himself ‘Retired Command Sergeant Major’ in Ad

A radio ad from 2006 features Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz falsely labeling himself a “Retired Command Sergeant Major” during his initial run for U.S. Congress.

In the ad, which was unearthed on August 2 prior to Kamala Harris selecting him as her running mate, Tim Walz refers to himself as sergeant major before going on to discuss how his time spent operating artillery led to hearing loss.

“My name is Tim Walz and I’m running for Congress here in Southern Minnesota for several important reasons. But today, I’d like to tell you about one issue that’s very personal to me. I am a retired Command Sergeant Major in the Minnesota National Guard,” he said. [Emphasis added]

The ad went on to describe how operating artillery led to hearing loss in one ear that required surgery to fix, driving home a campaign message about the importance of health care. The New York Times confirmed he suffered hearing loss in a report over the weekend:

But his time in an artillery unit came at a cost to his health, despite not seeing combat. The deafening booms and shock waves from howitzer barrels and their projectiles, which sound like freight trains as they fly overhead, left Mr. Walz with hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, according to a 2018 report from Minnesota Public Radio. In 2005 he underwent corrective surgery to alleviate the problem, the report said.

Walz’s use of the rank “retired Command Sergeant Major” since his run for U.S. Congress has drawn considerable criticism from members of the military community, with claims of stolen valor. Walz was not permitted to use that title after retiring when he failed to complete the final and necessary coursework. As Breitbart News reported, Walz “listed on his official biography a higher military rank than the one he ultimately retired with, drawing criticism from some veterans”:

After reports surfaced questioning his use of rank, the Kamala Harris campaign altered its official website’s biography of Walz by removing its reference to him as a “retired command sergeant major” and only noting that he once served at the command sergeant major rank.

According to CNN, Walz encountered criticism of his service characterizations going all the way back to 2006 during his run for U.S. Congress, which he denied at the time.

A viral video, which the Kamala HQ account on X originally shared on Wednesday, featured Walz touting gun control before saying he carried a weapon in war:

I spent 25 years in the Army, and I hunt … I’ve been voting for common-sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks. We can do CDC research … We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are at. [Emphasis added]

The Harris-Walz campaign later said he misspoke when he made that statement, even though Walz himself reposted the video just days prior to him being tapped as Kamala Harris’s VP pick.

A subsequent report from the Washington Free Beacon on Wednesday also claimed that Walz had previously presented himself as a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. Per Breitbart News:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), who is facing accusations of stolen valor, allegedly falsely claimed in a previous press release that he was a veteran of Afghanistan.

In a 2006 press release issued by his campaign, Walz was described as being a “veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom.”

The war in Afghanistan, which began on October 7, 2001, was called Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command website. The operation’s start came after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Democrat Tim Walz will spend Sunday, Feb. 19th and Monday, Feb. 20th traveling across Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District as he formally announces his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives,” the press release said. “Walz, a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and longtime Mankato educator is unopposed for the DFL endorsement and is slated to challenge Rep. Gil Gutknecht in November of 2006.”

A photo at the time featured Walz at an anti-President George W. Bush protest in which he was seen carrying a sign that read, “Enduring Freedom Veterans for [John] Kerry.”

Migrants Camp in City Streets as Biden's Shelters Overflow and Gang Violence Grows

Migrants Camp in City Streets as Biden’s Shelters Overflow and Gang Violence Grows

President Joe Biden’s flood of poor migrants is overflowing taxpayer-funded shelters and streaming into city streets and parks, causing alarm among voters, families, and city officials alike.

“It’s a question on everybody’s mind,” said New York-based Dave Giffen, the executive director of the activist non-governmental organization, Coalition for the Homeless. “There’s unquestionably more people sleeping in public spaces now.”

As the number of migrants continues to grow in the Big Apple, authorities are beginning to become concerned over the number of border crossers who are choosing to live outside in tents instead of going into the city’s shelter system.

One such camp has sprung up in Randall’s Island where literally hundreds of tents are routinely pitched by illegal aliens. Another outdoor camp has sprung up under a highway overpass in Brooklyn. But there are many more such encampments, the New York Times recently reported.

With the city already struggling to house some 65,000 migrants, a major factor spurring migrants to camp outside in tents is that they feel unsafe in the massive shelters arranged by city officials. Many migrants in these open-air encampments told the paper that there is no order or safety inside the buildings the city has refashioned into shelters and gangs, drugs, unruly behavior, and human trafficking is rife inside the shelters the city runs. Ultimately, they told the Times they feel safer outside in tents.

Actual citizens have complained about these conditions for months. And not just in New York, but in cities including Denver, Chicago and Boston, as well. Indeed, nearly everywhere there are migrant shelters, rising crime rates follow.

As to New York City, officials made a change to the long-standing “right to shelter” rules by placing a 60-day limit to the requirement to give shelter to homeless people.

However, despite the legalese of the updated rules, few have been evicted from city shelters because officials keep granting extensions to every migrant that applies for one. And many who actually were evicted simply re-applied at other shelters where their time limit clock starts ticking all over again.

But it is the number who are now opting to sleep in the streets and avoid the shelters altogether that is worrying city officials.

“That’s not OK,” said Anne Williams-Isom, the deputy mayor leading New York’s migrant response. “We’re not trying to be heavy-handed, but if you’ve had your time, you’ve had your case management, and you have to leave, you have to really move on.”

But instead of moving on, many are just moving outdoors.

“Unease over the violence has led some migrants to seek safety outside the shelter system,” the Times reported last Friday. “Migrants sleep on blankets, under tarps that they stretch over tree branches, or crammed into a colorful mosaic of camping tents some have ordered off Amazon. They pool their money to buy eggs, bread and meat to cook breakfast and stews that they sell or share among themselves.”

In some locations — such as Randall’s Island — the tent dwellers rush to tear down their encampments each morning to avoid security and police sweeps which are sporadically implemented to stop tent cities from forming. But in other locations they seem to be settling in for the long term.

New York is not the only deep blue state trying to put more limits on migrants. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has also begun moving toward trying to put limits on the Bay State’s so-called “right to shelter” laws by shifting waitlists to prioritize actual residents and U.S. military veterans who are homeless and putting those folks ahead of migrants. Massachusetts has been suffering from criticism for several years now by putting migrants ahead of veterans and citizens who are homeless.

With costs quickly closing in on a billion dollars, the state’s shelter system has become a bottomless pit for tax dollars in Massachusetts.

“We have been saying for months now that the rapid growth of our Emergency Assistance shelter system is not sustainable,” Healey said, according to WBUR-TV. “Massachusetts is out of shelter space, and we simply cannot afford the current size of this system.”

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the population of illegal immigrants in Massachusetts totals to an unsustainable 355,000 illegals.

The people of Massachusetts have already spent $1 billion on the state’s shelter system, but that cost will soar to another $1.8 billion by 2026, according to the Center for Boston Herald.

But the costs are actually far, far higher because this $1 billion is only the cost of the housing and does not include the costs of feeding, clothing, educating, and giving free medical and legal aid to those in the shelter system. Nor does it include other social services such as food stamps, Medicaid and the costs of other such programs.

The costs piling up in other areas are rarely included in reviews of how much illegal aliens cost the state. For instance, the cost to the Bay State’s food stamp program alone could ring in at $4.6 million by 2026. Then there is the rarely noted costs of incarcerating illegals arrested for crimes which now tops $27 million a year.

The situation is echoed all across the country in Illinois, California, Colorado, and every other city being swamped by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s wave after wave of illegal migrants.

Veteran Who Replaced Tim Walz Describes Him as ‘Traitor,’ ‘Military Imposter’

Retired Command Sergeant Major Thomas Behrends described Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, as a “traitor” and “military imposter.”

In a Facebook post, Behrends, who replaced Walz after he retired from the Minnesota National Guard, questioned how “deep the disgusting and despicable pit” of Walz’s lies and deceit went.

Behrends’ Facebook post also showed a photo of Walz dressed in a military uniform, as “a picture of who he thinks he is,” while another photo appeared to show Walz dressed in a drag queen outfit, which was described as being a photo of who Walz “really is.”

Posted by Thomas Behrends on Sunday, August 11, 2024

“Traitor, Deserter, Military Imposter, Kamelaeon Party Leader Tim Walz had been drug out of his outhouse and into the light, so we the American people can conduct an archeological dig of what lies below,” Behrends wrote. “As we descend into the depths of lies and deceit, who knows how deep the disgusting and despicable pit goes? I’m guessing that we will be digging for many moons, and when we think we have hit bottom, we will pop out in China.”

In an interview with the New York Post, Behrends criticized Walz for leaving the military prior to his until being deployed to Iraq.

“He had the opportunity to serve his country, and said ‘Screw you’ to the United States,” Behrends told the outlet. “That’s not who I would pick to run for vice president.”

As Breitbart News has previously reported, an archived press release from then-Congressional candidate Walz’s campaign in 2005, showed that Walz was aware that the “National Guard Public Affairs Office” had “announced a possible mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard”:

On Thursday, March 17 the National Guard Public Affairs Office announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard. First District congressional candidate Tim Walz currently hold the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the 1-125th Battalion, which is based in New Ulm and largely composed of men and women from southern Minnesota.

When ased about his possible deployment to Iraq Walz said, “I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on specifics of the deployment.”

Walz went on to leave the military, while his unit ended up being deployed to Iraq.

The Minnesota governor has also faced criticism and accusations of “stolen valor” after his biography on his website implied that he had retired at the rank of an E-9, or command sergeant major.

As Breitbart News reported:

Walz served in the Minnesota Army National Guard and retired at the rank of master sergeant, or an E-8. However, on his official website bio, he lists a higher rank that he served at for a short period that ultimately was rescinded, as he did not complete all the requirements to serve at that rank. However, his bio implies that he retired at the rank of command sergeant major, or an E-9.

The Harris campaign later removed the reference to Walz being a “retired command sergeant major,” from his biography and updated it to note that Walz had “once served at the command sergeant major rank,” according to Politico.

Behrends, and Paul Herr, another retired Army Command Sergeant Major wrote a letter in November 2018 in the West Central Tribune, noting that Walz had “embellished and selectively omitted facts and circumstances of his military career for years.”

“On September 17th, 2004 he was conditionally promoted to Command Sergeant Major,” the letter said. “The conditions had been outlined to him when he was counseled and he signed the Statement of Agreement and Certification. If the conditions are not met, the promotion is null and void, like it never happened.”

Tim Walz Gets Nuked by His Former Battalion Leader: ‘He Did Not Earn the Rank’

The former battalion commander for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) National Guard unit responded to reports that the governor had suggested he retired as a “Command Sergeant Major,” and noted that Walz did not “successfully complete any assignment” at that rank.

In a post on Facebook, John Kolb described it as an “affront to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps” that Walz, who was recently named Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, “continues to glom onto the title.”

“He did not earn the rank or successfully complete any assignment as an E9,” Kolb wrote. “It is an affront to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps that he continues to glom onto the title.”

“I can sit in the cockpit of an airplane, it does not make me a pilot,” Kolb wrote. “Similarly, when the demands of service and leadership at the highest level got real, he chose another path.”

Kolb’s post comes as Walz has faced criticism and accusations of “stolen valor.”

As Breitbart News previously reported, Walz had previously listed on his official biography, that he had retired at a higher rank than the one he had actually retired at:

Walz served in the Minnesota Army National Guard and retired at the rank of master sergeant, or an E-8. However, on his official website bio, he lists a higher rank that he served at for a short period that ultimately was rescinded, as he did not complete all the requirements to serve at that ran. However, his bio implies that he retired at the rank of command sergeant major, or an E-9.

The reference to Walz being a “retired command sergeant major” was later removed by the Harris campaign, and Walz’s biography was updated to note that the governor had “once served at the command sergeant major rank,” according to Politico.

Retired Capt. Corey Bjertness, who had served as the chaplain for Walz’s unit in the National Guard described Walz as being “cowardly” for leaving his unit prior to a deployment, in an interview with the New York Post.

“In our world, to drop out after a WARNORD [warning order] is issued is cowardly, especially for a senior enlisted guy,” Bjertness said in a statement.

Breitbart News previously reported that an archived press release from Walz’s campaign in March 2005 showed that the “National Guard Public Affairs Office announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard”:

If called to duty, Walz would leave behind his wife Gwen and four year old daughter, Hope.

Walz ended up leaving the military while his unit deployed to Iraq.

In Kolb’s Facebook post, he stated that Walz had “got out of the way for better leadership,” and praised Tom Behrends, who replaced Walz, as being “the right leader at the right time.” Kolb added that he had “no opinion of Mr. Walz’s decision to leave service at the time he did.”

“I have no opinion of Mr. Walz’s decision to leave service at the time he did,” Kolb added. “It was his right to retire early. I also have no criticism of his service as an E7 and E8 in the MNARNG. By all accounts and on the record, he was a competent Chief of Firing Battery/Gunnery Sergeant and First Sergeant. I cannot say the same of his service sitting, frocked, in the CSM chair.”

JD Vance: Mass Deportations Should ‘Start with 1 Million’

Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that the Trump administration will start mass deportations with a million people.

Anchor Jonathan Karl said, “One of the proposals in the platform you’ve talked about, and Trump has talked about, is a mass deportation. You said he said he’ll start with the easy ones, the criminals, people who commit crimes, deport them, but he said deporting 15 million to 20 million people, how do you actually do that?

Vance said, “We have to start with the fact that we have a wide-open southern border because our border czar set a lot of open border policies.”

Karl said, “You know she wasn’t the border czar.”

Vance said, “That was what the media called her. She assumed the title.”

Karl asked, “You’re going to knock on doors and ask people for their papers?”

Vance said, “This is the wrong attitude towards it, right? There’s 20 million people here illegally. You start with what’s achievable. You do that, and then you go onto what’s achievable from there. If you deport a lot of violent criminals and frankly if you make it harder to hire illegal labor, I think you go a lot of the way to solving the illegal immigration problem. But look, President Trump is absolutely right. You cannot have a border unless you’re willing to deport some people. I think it’s interesting that people focus on, well, how do you deport 18 million people? Let’s start with 1 million. That’s where Kamala Harris has failed and we can go from there.”

JD Vance: Tim Walz Lied About Military Career, Used Dishonesty for ‘Political Gain’

Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Gov. Tim Walz lied about his military career for his own political gain.

Anchor Dana Bash said, “Governor Walz served 24 years, he even stayed after he could have retired because of 9/11, more than the country asked of him, do you honor his service?”

Vance said, “Well of course, Dana, I honor his service and I’ve never criticized what Tim Walz did when he was in the military. I criticized his retirement decision and most importantly, Dana, I criticized his lying about his own record.”

He added, “This is a guy who was captured on video saying, I carried a gun in war. He never went to war. This is a guy who has been captured on video as other people say, he’s an Afghanistan veteran, he’s a veteran of a war, nodding along in agreement instead of saying ‘No, no, no, I did serve my country. I did it honorably, but I never went to a war zone.’ I’m not criticizing Tim Walz’s service. I’m criticizing the fact that he lied about his service for political gain. Dana, now I served in the United States Marine Corps, you know this. And look, there are a lot of things that I’m proud about. I’ve never lied about what I did or overstated it because it would be beneficial to me in an election. I think that’s what Tim Walz did. That’s what I was criticizing. Yes, I do think it’s scandalous behavior.”

Trump Campaign Says ‘Foreign Sources’ Hacked Internal Communications

The Trump campaign claimed that its internal communications were hacked by “foreign sources hostile to the United States,” according to a recent report.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed to Politico that “documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources” that were deemed “hostile” to the nation. The statement from Cheung came after the outlet had reportedly received “emails from an anonymous account with internal documents from former President Donald Trump’s campaign beginning around July 22.”

Included in the documents sent to the outlet was a “research dossier” that the campaign had conducted on Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), Trump’s pick for vice president:

On July 22, POLITICO began receiving emails from an anonymous account. Over the course of the past few weeks, the person – who used an AOL email account and identified themselves only as “Robert” – relayed what appeared to be internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official. A research dossier the campaign had apparently done on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, which was dated Feb. 23, was included in the documents. The documents are authentic, according to two people familiar with them and granted anonymity to describe interal communications. One of the people described the dossier as a preliminary version of Vance’s vetting file.

A portion of a “research document” about Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was reportedly also among the documents sent to the outlet.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Cheung said in a statement to the outlet. “On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee.”

Cheung’s statement comes after Microsoft released a nine-page report on Friday revealing that it had been “tracking” activity that “increasingly points to Iran’s intent to influence this year’s US presidential election.”

In a blog from Microsoft, the company discussed activities by several groups with connections to the “Iranian government.”

One of the groups was reported to have “sent a spear phishing email in June to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign from the compromised email account of a former senior advisor,” according to Microsoft:

Yet another Iranian group, this one connected with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, sent a spear phishing email in June to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign from the compromised email account of a former senior advisor. The email contained a link that would direct traffic through a domain controled by the group before routing to the website of the provided link. Within days of this activity, the same group unsuccessfully attempted to log into an account belonging to a former presidential candidate. We’ve since notified those targeted.

“The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House,” Cheung added.

In July, United States officials revealed that they had received information about a potential assassination plot on Trump by Iran.

The Department of Justice recently revealed that a Pakistani man, with alleged connections to Iran, was arrested and charged in connection to a potential plot to assassinate Trump and several other U.S. officials.

Kamala Harris Copies Trump’s No Taxes on Tips Campaign Promise

Vice President Kamala Harris copied a campaign promise first announced by former President Donald Trump to eliminate taxes on tips.

During a campaign rally in Nevada on Saturday, Harris acknowledged that Culinary Union Local 226 was at the rally, and she continued on to vow that if elected president in November, she would work to “raise the minimum wage” and “eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Harris’s promise comes after Trump announced in June during a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, that if elected president, his administration would “not charge taxes on tips.”

“I know Culinary 226 is in the house,” Harris told the crowd. “And, the culinary union, as everyone in Nevada knows, they have helped lead the way in our country for workers’ rights and workers dignity. I have to say, for years I’ve been so proud to work by your side. When I was Attorney General of California, we worked together to crack down on wage theft. When I was a United States senator we fought together for paid family leave and medical leave, and earlier this year right here in Vegas we celebrated your historic contract win. And, it is my promise to everyone here, when I am President, we will continue our fight for working families of America. Including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

During a roundtable event at an African-American church in Michigan in June, Trump again vowed that his administration was “not going to tax tips.”

“Tell your waiters and waitresses, anybody else getting tips, ’cause they’re… a lot of people get tips,” Trump said. “Car attendants and caddies, and a lot of different people get tips. We are not going to tax tips – the tax immediately is coming off.”

Trump criticized Harris’s recent promise to end taxation on tips, stating that she “just wants it for Political Purposes.”

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY – It won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

The former president has also been seen leaving a $500 tip at a restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, writing “Vote Trump, No Tax on Tip” on the check.

Walz’s Former Chaplain on Walz Leaving Prior to Deployment: ‘Cowardly’

The former chaplain of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) National Guard unit described him as “cowardly” for retiring and leaving his unit right before a possible deployment.

In an interview with the New York Post, retired Capt. Corey Bjertness explained that just because Walz had been “running for Congress,” that was “not an excuse” for leaving his unit before a deployment. Bjertness’s words come after previous reports show that Walz had broken a promise he made in 2005 that he would deploy with his unit from the U.S. Army National Guard despite running for Congress at the time.

“In our world, to drop out after a WARNORD [warning order] is issued is cowardly, especially for a senior enlisted guy,” Bjertness explained to the outlet.

As Breitbart News previously reported, an archived press release from Walz’s campaign in March 2005 revealed that the “National Guard Public Affairs Office announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard”:

On Thursday, March 17 the National Guard Public Affairs Office announcecd a possible partial mobilization of roughy 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard.

“Running for Congress is not an excuse,” Bjertness added. “I stopped everything and went to war. I left my wife with three teenagers and a 6-year-old and was gone for 19 months.”

Allan Bonnifield, a soldier who had served with Walz during his time in the military told MPR News in an interview in 2018 that Walz had “weighed” his “decision to run for Congress very, very heavy,” as he knew his unit was “going on another deployment to Iraq.”

The outlet reported on the 2018 interview:

“He weighed that decision to run for Congress very, very heavy,” Bonnifield said. “He loved the military, he loved the Guard, he loved the soldiers that he worked with, and making that decision was very tough for him. Especially knowing that we were going on another deployment to Iraq. He didn’t take that decision lightly at all.”

In a separate interview with the New York Post, Tom Behrends, who ended up replacing Walz, described the Minnesota governor’s decision to leave his unit prior to deployment as saying “‘Screw you’ to the United States.”

“He had the opportunity to serve his country, and said, ‘Screw you’ to the United States,” Behrends told the outlet. “That’s not who I would pick to run for vice president.”

Walz, who was recently announced as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, has faced accusations of “stolen valor” and criticism after the biography on his website had previously implied that he had retired with the rank of an E-9, or command sergeant major.

The Harris campaign later removed the reference to Walz being a “retired command sergeant major,” and updated Walz’s biography to highlight that the governor had “once served at the command sergeant major rank,” according to Politico.
